Holiday Hosting: Prepare Your Plumbing for Extra Guests

More guests means more showers, more cooking, and more stress on your plumbing system. Plan ahead.

← Back to Blog Holiday plumbing preparation for extra guests

The holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year — unless your guest bathroom toilet overflows during Christmas dinner or your kitchen drain backs up right as you're finishing the holiday feast. More guests mean more water usage, more cooking, and more strain on plumbing systems that often haven't been inspected in years. A little preparation goes a long way.

Assess Your Water Heater Capacity

A standard 40-gallon water heater can provide about 2–3 consecutive showers before running short on hot water. If you're hosting 8 relatives for the holidays, stagger shower schedules and plan for adequate recovery time (about 30–45 minutes between full uses). If your water heater is aging or undersized, this holiday season might be the motivation to upgrade — tankless systems provide virtually unlimited hot water and never leave guests stranding in a cold shower.

Pre-Holiday Drain Health Check

Drains that empty slowly under normal conditions will back up completely under holiday stress. Before guests arrive:

  • Run hot water down all drains and check that they flow freely
  • Use a drain cleaner (enzyme-based, not harsh chemicals) on any slow drains
  • Clean the garbage disposal by running ice cubes through it followed by lemon peels
  • Check toilet flush strength — weak flushes indicate partial clogs that will worsen

Prepare the Guest Bathroom

The guest bathroom gets used more in one holiday weekend than it might all year. Set it up for success:

  • Stock extra toilet paper within reach (not just under the sink)
  • Place a small waste basket in the bathroom — guests often flush items that shouldn't be flushed simply because there's no other option
  • Consider a courteous sign: "Please flush only toilet paper — thank you for helping us keep things flowing!"
  • Check that the toilet doesn't run constantly (a sign of a worn flapper that should be replaced)

Kitchen Plumbing: Holiday Cooking Rules

Holiday cooking generates enormous amounts of cooking grease, food scraps, and oils — all enemies of your kitchen drain. The rules:

  • Never pour cooking fats, oils, or grease down the drain. Collect in a jar and dispose in the trash. Grease solidifies in pipes and creates blockages that worsen over time.
  • Scrape plates thoroughly before rinsing in the sink
  • Run cold water 15 seconds before, during, and after garbage disposal use
  • Avoid putting stringy, fibrous, or starchy foods (celery, potato peels, artichoke leaves) in the disposal

Know Your Emergency Shutoffs

With more people using more plumbing, the odds of an unexpected issue go up. Make sure you know where your main water shutoff is and that it operates freely. Also know the location of individual fixture shutoffs (the valves behind toilets and under sinks) — in an overflow situation, seconds count. A little preparedness can turn a disaster into a minor inconvenience.

Dishwasher and Appliance Notes

Your dishwasher runs more over the holidays than the rest of the year combined. Inspect the door gasket for any cracks or gaps. Check the drain hose connection under the sink for signs of moisture. Don't overload — holiday dishes are often larger than everyday plates, and jamming them in can block spray arms and damage the racks. If your dishwasher is leaving dishes not fully clean or is noisier than usual, it may be time for a service call.

After the Holidays: Plumbing Reset

Once the guests are gone, do a quick plumbing inspection:

  • Run hot water down all drains to clear any food buildup
  • Check under all sinks for signs of drips or moisture
  • Check the water meter reading — if it's higher than expected, you may have a slow leak that developed during the heavy-use period
